IRS Fax Numbers: Where to Fax Every Form (2026)
Searching for “the IRS fax number”? There isn’t one. The IRS only accepts faxes for specific forms, sent to form-specific numbers that usually depend on your state. Pick your form below to get the exact fax number and send it in minutes.
XenFax is an independent online fax service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the IRS.

There is no general IRS fax number
The IRS does not publish a single, catch-all fax line where you can send anything. In practice there are only two situations where faxing the IRS is correct:
- Faxing a specific form that the IRS accepts by fax — such as Form 2553, SS-4, 2848, or 8821 — to that form’s dedicated fax number. For most of these, the correct number depends on the state where your business or residence is located.
- Replying to an IRS notice or letter at the fax number printed on that notice. When the IRS asks for a response (for example a CP2000 or an audit letter), the response instructions include a fax number specific to that case — use it, and include a copy of the notice as your cover page.
If you are trying to fax something that isn’t on a form’s accepted list and you don’t have a notice with a fax number, faxing is usually not the right channel — you likely need to e-file or mail instead.
You cannot fax a Form 1040 tax return
One of the most common searches is “IRS 1040 fax number” — but the IRS does not accept individual income tax returns (Form 1040) by fax. There is no 1040 fax line. If you send a 1040 to a random IRS fax number, it will not be treated as a filed return. Your real options are:
- E-file. This is the fastest and IRS-preferred way to file a 1040, and it gives you an electronic acknowledgment that the return was accepted.
- Mail the paper return to the IRS address for your state (the correct address depends on your state and on whether you are enclosing a payment). The IRS “Where to File” page lists the address for each state.
- Responding to a notice or audit? If the IRS contacted you about your 1040 — for example a CP2000 proposing changes, or an examination — fax your response and supporting documents to the fax number printed on that specific notice. That is the only time a “1040 fax” is appropriate, and it goes to your case, not to a general line.
